The Consumer Advisory Committee on Utilities (CACU) has dismissed calls for the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) to be stripped of its monopoly.

The CACU gives consumer input to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR).

Energy Minister, Phillip Paulwell, as well as special interest groups have been mooting the possibility of liberalizing the distribution of electricity.

CACU says it was Mr. Paulwell, who in 2007, extended the monopoly of the Jamaica Public Service company by 20 years, when it was taken-over by Japanese firm, Marubeni.

The calls to free-up the market are based on cheaper electricity rates, to consumers.

Spokesman for the CACU Steven Wedderburn says consumers may be faced with high electricity costs if the market is freed up.
